Home and Family Safety
Welcome to your Garage! Home safety is important for all families, but especially for those that have been bereaved. Keeping up with home maintenance and ensuring that the home environment is maintained in a safe way can feel like an additional burden, but these actions are critically important to a bereaved person’s sense of comfort and security. Home safety is especially in homes where children are present.
In your Garage you will find resources that will help you address basic home maintenance needs, instruct you how to secure your home to avoid burglaries and break-ins, teach you how to prevent home fire safety, and provide important safety information if children are in your home. Bereaved families should pay special attention to secure firearm storage, particularly in families where at-risk individuals may be present. At-risk individuals include those suffering with severe grief, suicidality, impulsivity, substance use problems, or depression. We know that limiting access to lethal means can save a life, so secure storage of firearms (i.e., all firearms locked and stored separately from ammunition) can make the difference between life and death. Use the Self-Care Journey section to keep notes about your own experiences and how you would like to care for yourself through your grief journey.
