Overview

Welcome to your Kitchen! Grief creates emotional strain in our lives that can make it challenging to care for ourselves in ways that we typically would. It’s not uncommon for bereaved individuals to lose their appetites, skip meals, or lose weight after the death of a loved one. Alternatively, grief can lead some of us to overindulge, whether that be by overeating, substituting unhealthy, high-carbohydrate snack foods for well-balanced meals, or by using alcohol excessively to help us manage with grief-related stress. All of these behaviors are understandable, but over time can lead to health problems for survivors. For those who struggled with eating or substance use problems before the death, grief can sometimes make these problems worse.

In Your Kitchen you can find resources about understanding the connection between grief, eating, and substance use. Use the Self-Journey section to keep notes about your own experiences and how you would like to care for yourself through your grief journey.
