His team provides suicide subject matter expertise to the company in support of LivingWorks mission and vision. He also holds an appointment as a professor in the department of psychology at Florida State University. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Suicide Research and an associate editor of the journal Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, and an editorial board member of the journal Military Behavioral Health.
Prior to joining LivingWorks Dr. Gutierrez was a full time clinical/research psychologist at the VA and professor of psychiatry. He has been an academic suicidologist for over 25 years and is a past-president of the American Association of Suicidology. During his career he has trained multiple graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in suicide research methodology, clinical risk assessment, and suicide-specific psychosocial interventions. He has served as a suicide subject matter expert for the U.S. Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, and multiple state and local suicide prevention efforts.
He has a bachelor’s degree from Winona State University, master’s degree and PhD from the University of Michigan in clinical psychology and is trained in cognitive therapy for suicide prevention. He is also trained in the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicide (CAMS) therapeutic framework and has trained over 100 VA mental health clinicians in a group version of CAMS.
